Shockingly Ollie P had a good game today. He was able to go more than 6 innings, only walked 2 batters, and struck out a batter per inning. He did give up a lot of hits, but the most important thing for Ollie is the walks. If he can ever manage to keep those down he will be more ‘successful’.

I know people don’t like to look at a pitchers wins for his success, but Josh Stinson is now 7-1 and that is very impressive in my book. The ability to win like that and not lose is very impressive in my book. While I would like to the walks come down a little bit I am okay with the strikeouts because of his ability to get ground balls, which has improved since he moved to the rotation. It took 31 games, but Josh Satin finally went deep for Bingy. He has continued to with a high average to go along with a BABIP, but I am not too nervous of his average to drop that much or if at all because he has shown an ability to maintain a high BABIP throughout his career.

Ollie and Brad Holt with good games on the same day? This wasn’t a great game by any means for Holt but it is more in the mold of his starts back when he was dominating. A lot of strikeouts and fly balls while keeping the hits down. Wilmer Flores must not have liked be giving Rafael Fernandez props as he came back today with 3 hits and 4 RBI’s while returning to having the highest batting average on the team.

Cesar Puello hit the magic 30 steals mark today. Now if only he could get on base or hit for some power he would be in good shape. It is shocking how low his SLG% given that he is not that small of a guy and you would expect at least 5 home runs by now

A.J. Pinera was much better in this start than in his first start an earned his first professional victory. The offense was clicking on all cylinders tonight with the Cyclones scoring runs in five consecutive innings. J.B. Brown had a good game with 2 extra base hits (a home run and double) and every starter except Cody Holliday had a hit tonight.

Everyday this offense puts up runs, but 3 errors and a passed ball helped contribute to 5 unearned runs scoring and allowing this game go into extras where the team lost in the 12th. This team can sure hit, but their defense is awful, which is fully expected of kids at this level.
Rodriguez, Nieuwenhuis Hitters of the Week
Posted by: | CommentsMiLB.com released its players of the week for the week ending July 11th and two Mets cracked the hitters list although no pitchers were selected.
Eastern League
Kirk Nieuwenhuis, Binghamton
.469/.472/.844, 15-for-32, 6 2B, 0 3B, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 9 R, 2 BB, 5 K, 0 SB
Kirk Nieuwenhuis, who was twice a Florida State League Player of the Week last year, successfully brought his act to Double-A this season. He enters the week of July 12 with an Eastern League-leading 44 extra-base hits, and his performance over the last seven games has been a shot in the arm to the B-Mets, who won four of those contests. Nieuwenhuis was 4-for-4 with a double and three RBIs on Tuesday, doubled twice during a 3-for-5 Wednesday and homered on Thursday. He was 3-for-7 between Friday and Saturday, and he homered and doubled on Sunday.
Appalachian League
Aderlin Rodriguez, Kingsport
.429/.452/.929, 12-for-28, 5 2B, 0 3B, 3 HR, 9 RBI, 9 R, 2 BB, 3 K, 0 SB
The second consecutive Mets prospects to take Appalachian League honors — Javier Rodriguez was Player of the Week last week — Aderlin Rodriguez (no relation) has busted out over his last eight games. Coming into the season, the 18-year-old Dominican had just 17 Gulf Coast League games worth of pro experience under his belt, and on Monday morning he woke up with a .208 batting average through his first 12 Appy League games. He homered for his second time in as many games that night, going 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored. He doubled in each of his next three games, and he added two homers to Thursday’s game, driving in five runs with five trips to the plate. He doubled twice more, knocking in a run and scoring, on Sunday.
Congrats to the two of them they really deserved it they were insane this week. Rodriguez is having a season in Kingsport similar to that of Wilmer Flores (with more power) except that Flores was roughly two years younger at the time. i am still happy that the Mets are being more conservative with him and it appears to be paying off right now. Hopefully it continues to pay and this is a sign that the Mets have learned from their mistakes with Jefry Marte, Francisco Pena, among others.

Does anyone else think that Scott Shaw is pitching himself into a pink slip? I think he is. Probably won’t be around to much longer with how poorly he has pitched this season. He has always had marginal stuff at best so this could be the final straw. The offense doesn’t do much, but of course Captain Kirk Nieuwenhuis had a good game.

Honestly what Wilmer Flores is doing right now is just ridiculous and makes me glad he was not traded for a couple months of Cliff Lee. He is currently riding a 13-game hit streak and has a hit in all but 1 game in St. Lucie. Brandon Moore is actually doing better than I thought he would since the promotion. Keeping hits reasonable and strikeouts up. He just needs to get the walks down a little bit.

Another okay performance from Josh Stinson. Nothing spectacular, but also nothing to sneeze at. Sean Ratliff continued to be a cog in the offense getting a ground rule double in the first to kick things off in a 3-run inning. He also added 2 walks and Kirk Nieuwenhuis continued his crazy hot start.

Juan Lagares appears to finally be settling into a groove in St. Lucie after early struggles. Jeurys Familia had a Oliver Perez-esque bad start with 7 walks in just 3.2 innings. He only gave up 2 hits, but when you walk 7 guys bad things will happen and that’s why he gave up 4 runs.

Lucas Duda continued his hot stretch with 3 more hits, but a closer look at his numbers are a little concerning. His lefty/righty splits are ridiculous hitting nearly .200 points higher against righties. The only positives are that he has maintained decent patience against lefties so he isn’t getting himself out and he is still showing power against them.

Mark Cohoon had a decent, but only went 4 innings and I am still trying to figure out why it was such a short outing. The offense kicked things into gear off a pretty good pitching prospect in Tim Alderson. The pitcher Cohoon even chipped in offensively with a double of his own and was helped by huge games out of Kirk Nieuwenhuis and Sean Ratliff. Ratliff has seem to cut down on the strikeouts and improve his power since being promoted to Double-A which is a pretty impressive feet. Now if he can just learn to take a walk we are in business.

Oliver Perez was shockingly very good today. While his command wasn’t great it was respectable and his stuff was good with just 2 hits and 7 K’s. He did get in trouble in the 6th by walking the leadoff batter and giving up a run on a single. Scott Moviel came in and gave up a hit, walk, and walk to allow one of Perez’s inherited runners to score. Right now Wilmer Flores is honestly on another planet with the bat. He just can’t be stopped.

The Sand Gnats actually scored some runs today by doing the only thing they can do, steal bases. They swapped 6 bases in total including a steal of home plate by Alonzo Harris. Collin McHugh had a good game today giving his team a 4-run lead going into the eighth inning, but then that’s when the collapse happened. The bullpen got into 1-out trouble and then Jefry Marte commited his 21st error of the season to allow the runner to score and everyone else to reach base safe. Then after getting the second out the batter hit a triple, but wound up scoring on the play thanks to an Alonzo Harris error.

Another quality start from Josh Stinson. Long term I still see him as a bullpen arm, but no harm in letting him start. Kirk Nieuwenhuis has returned from his injury on FIRE. He picked the perfect time with the trade deadline looming. Are you seeing these box score Mariners? And I still wanna know who Raul Reyes thinks he his with an .850 SLG%. It is only 11 games, but still he has never posted numbers anywhere near that.

Wooohooo! Finally Wilmer Flores got an extra base hit and hit it far for his a solo homer. Now his .ISO no longer sits at .000. Pretty decent start for Jeurys Familia. A lot of walks, but he kept the hits own and struck out a lot. It looks like Angel Calero is back from his PED suspension.

It is the same old same old with the Sand Gnats offense. They just can’t score any more runs now that Flores and Lagares aren’t in the middle of the line up. Jefry Marte has been just AWFUL since the promotions. The exact opposite of what he needed to be for this team to go anywhere. Any positives from this game? Probably none, but maybe Wilfredo Tovar.

The only thing I have to say is. How the hell does Jeff Flagg have more stolen bases than Darrell Ceciliani. And brilliant outing from Ryan Fraser who is looking really good so far with his power stuff.

Boy can this Mets team hit. Over 20 hits yesterday and they come back with 14 hits today. What got them was terrible pitching and their hitting with runners in scoring position. I love what Javier Rodriguez is doing. He is putting up great splits and seems to show some untapped offensive power to go along with his plus defense. Keep an eye on him moving forawrd.
…As you can see I am going to be trying to fix the way I do these reports. I need to fix the css so that the tables look better which I will hopefully be able to finish doing by tomorrow…
