Bad Draft News For Mets Fans

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Well this is at least bad news in my opinion.  According to Frankie Piliere of AOL Fanhouse “it appears that they[the Mets] are down to two players: Matt Harvey and Zack Cox“.  That is just great the two players I do not want the Mets to select. Harvey has some great upside and was right up there with Rick Porcello for being considered the best prep pitcher in the 2007 MLB draft, but has been a bit of an enigma in college.  I love the velocity and the amount ground balls he gets with his fastball, but the lack of command and consistency of his performances make him too risky for a college player to take so early in the draft.  If the Mets love him so much then they should have taken him back in 2007 instead of Eric Niesen, Brant Rustich, Scott Moviel, Nathan Vineyard, or Eddie Kunz (who have all done nothing so far) and bought him out of his commitment to UNC.

Cox on the other hand just seems to “safe” of a pick when you don’t pick again until the 89th pick in the draft.  When I say safe I mean it is not smart to take a player with such a low ceiling/high floor like Cox in the Mets situation.  I don’t want Cox because he is not a good player, because he is, I just do not want him because unless he moves to second base his power will be below average and second base is the least of the Mets’s concerns within the system right now as Ruben Tejada is ready to take over once the Mets wise up and cut Luis Castillo and Reese Havens is working his way up through the system with a full head of steam.  Not to mention I like both of these players more than Cox at the moment.

Piliere also says the Mets are also considering Michael Kvasnicka, Christian Colon, and Justin O’Conner.  It would be a HUGE reach to take Kvasnicka so early so he should not even be in the conversation.  Colon is a solid player, although I would not even take him before Cox.  O’Conner on the other hand could be an interesting player to pick especially if the Mets would be planning to use him as a catcher.

I realize I sound like I am contradicting myself that I think Harvey is too risky and Cox is to safe, but what I am trying to say is if you are going to take a college player take someone like Michael Choice, Bryce Brentz, or Chris Sale of he falls.  I know the Mets don’t like to go over slot, but with just one early pick they should go all out and take the best player available he regardless of slot perhaps even buying a high school player out of a strong commitment.
