Injured Players “Frustrated” Early On

Over at the Star Ledger, Andy McCullough has updates on a few of the injury plagued Mets.

He kicks things of with the tidbit that Lucas Duda, who was injured his back working out, is “frustrated” with his swing right now. Duda is expected to take part in the Mets game versus Washington today.

McCullough also mentions that Andres Torres (glute) is expected to play today as well.

David Wright is still day-to-day and manager Terry Collins hopes he can take “light swings” in the cage this weekend.

Probably the biggest news of all the updates is McCullough’s update on Scott Hairston, who McCullough reports:

Four days after he received a trio of cortisone shots on his strained left oblique, reserve outfielder Scott Hairston remained frustrated with his lack of progress.

His side still feels tight, and he has yet to resume any activity that put stress on the area. Hairston hopes to return to action by the final two weeks of the Grapefruit League.

It feels like Hairston will not be ready to go at least early on in the season if you ask me. Even if he r

ecovers before the end of spring training he might not have enough time to get the necessary amount of reps in and will likely open the year on the disabled list. This gives Adam Loewen an even bigger incentive to continue his early success in camp with an opening on the big league club that has his name written on it.

Loewen is 4-for-11 with a homerun, walk, and 4 strikeouts thus far.

It is rare to see a guy with so many strikeouts give up 4 runs, but just like he has all season long Dillon Gee struggled with the long ball giving up 2 more home runs.  He has a very high HR/FB percentage, much higher than his career average, and you can take that two ways.  One he is getting a little unlucky and when it returns to normal his runs will start going down or the second way that in the upper levels his average stuff is getting hit harder by tougher competition.  Only time will tell, but I expect his ERA to go down a little and settle in the low 4′s.  Incase you forgot Lucas Duda is a beast.

Michael Antonini started the season off rough, but ever since mid May he has been outstanding.  Out of his last 10 starts 9 of them are quality starts, he is striking out a batter per innings, and keeping the walks way way down while holding the opponents to a 3.26 ERA.  He is restoring his prospect status this year.  Michael Fisher is quietly continuing to hit with 3 more hits tonight in Bingy raising his season average to .360.   He hasn’t showed any since leaving Savannah so that is something he will need to start demonstrating.

Does Kirk Nieuwenhuis stop?  Dude has 3 or more hits in 3 of his last 4 games and has gotten his average over the .300 mark.  His splits are great, the power is great, the speed is great, the defense is great so if plate discipline ever comes around man can be a serious force and during his recent hot streak the K:BB has been much better.  The same thing goes for Sean Ratliff.  He has been much better against the lefties this year and staying in longer on the pitches hitting them for hard line drives more often.  He already has 21 RBI’s in 23 games for Bingy after being an FSL All-Star so his stock is definitely way up this year.

Darin Gorski was decent, but not dominant tonight.  I’ll be interested in Mike Newman’s report on him to see if his stuff is still the same as last year or if he has made any improvements.  The only way this offense works when Jefry Marte and Cesar Puello are going like they were tonight.  Otherwise they will score no runs every game.

Don’t know why the Mets are trying to use Jeff Walters as a starter he doesn’t have the command at all for a starting role and should be put in the bullpens where his stuff plays the best.  Eddie Lora is looking like a major bust. Just one hit five games.  That hit was a home run, but still disappointing and he has a ridiculous 10 strikeouts in 16 games.  Great return on Billy Wagner….

Lucas Duda continued his hot stretch with 3 more hits, but a closer look at his numbers are a little concerning.  His lefty/righty splits  are ridiculous hitting nearly .200 points higher against righties.  The only positives are that he has maintained decent patience against lefties so he isn’t getting himself out and he is still showing power against them.

Mark Cohoon had a decent, but only went 4 innings and I am still trying to figure out why it was such a short outing.  The offense kicked things into gear off a pretty good pitching prospect in Tim Alderson.  The pitcher Cohoon even chipped in offensively with a double of his own and was helped by huge games out of Kirk Nieuwenhuis and Sean Ratliff.  Ratliff has seem to cut down on the strikeouts and improve his power since being promoted to Double-A which is a pretty impressive feet.  Now if he can just learn to take a walk we are in business.

Oliver Perez was shockingly very good today.  While his command wasn’t great it was respectable and his stuff was good with just 2 hits and 7 K’s.  He did get in trouble in the 6th by walking the leadoff batter and giving up a run on a single.  Scott Moviel came in and gave up a hit, walk, and walk to allow one of Perez’s inherited runners to score.  Right now Wilmer Flores is honestly on another planet with the bat.  He just can’t be stopped.

The Sand Gnats actually scored some runs today by doing the only thing they can do, steal bases.  They swapped 6 bases in total including a steal of home plate by Alonzo HarrisCollin McHugh had a good game today giving his team a 4-run lead going into the eighth inning, but then that’s when the collapse happened.  The bullpen got into 1-out trouble and then Jefry Marte commited his 21st error of the season to allow the runner to score and everyone else to reach base safe.  Then after getting the second out the batter hit a triple, but wound up scoring on the play thanks to an Alonzo Harris error.

Mets Farm Report: June 29th, 2010

Stars of the Night:
AAA – Lucas Duda (1-for-3, HR, RBI, R, BB)
AA – Raul Reyes (2-for-4, HR, 5 RBI, R, K)
HiA – Jordany Valdespin (3-for-5, 2 RBI, R)

AAA – Buffalo Bisons

Dilllon Gee pitched a stellar game today it is to bad he couldn’t have pitched this well all season because then we could have tried to swing him in a Lee trade. Boy has Lucas Duda been raking since being promoted to AAA.

AA – Binghamton Mets

The same old story continued today with Eric Niesen.  He got decent results, but continued to struggle with his command.  If he doesn’t start attacking hitters soon with his plus stuff then he is never going to be able to make it further in his development and become a starter in the bigs.  Emary Frederick did a great job coming in and stranding two of Eddie Kunz’s inherited runners.  In the third inning the BMets got a coupe of bloops followed by a walk which allowed Raul Reyes to come up and strike again, this time with a grand salami.  This is the second straight game Sean Ratliff has taken a walk with no strikeouts.

HiA – St. Lucie Mets

Mets pitching gave up 3 runs on just 6 hits thanks to an incredible 8 walks! They did strike out 7 batters, but just wow 8 walks.  It was a bitter sweet start for Brad Holt who only gave up 1 run and 2 hits while striking out 5 in 5 inning, however, is control was still an issue also delivering 5 walks.  Something tells me the success was more due to the level of competition than Holt actually getting things straightened out.  Nothing looked noticeably different in the videos from last year to this year so it is really odd how big of a 180 he has undergone.  It is amazing that the offense had 15 hits yet just 1 went for extra bases (double from Richard Lucas).  Wilmer Flores was at it again today with 3 more hits and now has 13 hits in just 6 games for St. Lucie.  Because it was a day game Carlos Beltran DHed and picked up a hit now reaching base in every rehab game so far.  He will play center field tomorrow.

LoA – Savannah Sand Gnats

John Church was reportedly hitting 93-94 mph tonight on the gun which would be a tick above previous velocity reports.  Church had put up good numbers the last couple of years so if the velocity sticks he could make some noise as a legitimate prospect.  Nick Santomauro continued the climb back up to .200 with another hit today.  You know you are in the low minors when a game has 7 errors in it.  Alonzo Harris had the biggest blow of the night hitting a 3-run jack in the sixth inning.

SSA – Brooklyn Cyclones

How can you not love what Cory Vaughn is doing right now?  He now has 3 home runs in his last 3 games and has hit 4 more home runs in Brooklyn than Ike Davis.  Not only that, but his biggest flaw was supposed to be plate discipline and he is currently rocking a 7:5 K:BB. It is a small sample size, but a very encouraging one.

RK – Kingsport Mets

I still think it was a terrible draft pick, but hey at least Javier Rodriguez is actually doing something now.
