Erik Goeddel is on the DL

It was reported a couple of days ago that Savannah Sand Gnats starter Erik Goeddel has been placed on the DL with a right shoulder strain.

In 2011 Goeddel had been doing terrific posting all around great numbers going 2-2 with a 2.72 ERA while giving up just 35 hits and nine walks in 43 innings to go along with 46 strikeouts.

Goeddel had suffered elbow injuries in high school and college, which is the reason UCLA had been using him as a reliever and why the Mets were able to draft him so low.

In order to avoid this arm injuries the Mets had used him in long relief appearances his last two times out, but Goeddel still found his way onto the DL.

Health will always be the key to Goeddel’s career. He has a talented arm sitting in the low to mid 90′s with hard sink and featuring a plus slider. He has the talent to pitch in the major leagues, some guys just don’t have the durability to last 162 games.

Adam Kolarek took his place on the roster. That does not make me happy….

Familia Up to AA, Chris Young has Swelling

(Scott Jontes/MiLB.com)

Today the Mets have announced 21-year-old right-handed pitching prospect Jeurys Familia has been promoted from Hi-A St. Lucie to Double-A Binghamton.

This year Familia has posted a line of:

(1-1, 1.49) – 36.1 IP, 21 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 1 HB, 8 BB, 36 K, 0.80 WHIP

Last year Familia spent all of last year in St. Lucie and struggled with his command going 6-9 with 5.58 ERA.  Despite the overall bad numbers it was a tale of two seasons for Familia who has been lights out ever since last July.  He took a bit off his fastball to get better command and the results have been huge.  He dropped his BB/9 from  5.50 to 1.98 which is not just good, but well above-average, especially for a pitcher his age.  He hasn’t even suffered in the strikeouts still K’ing a batter per inning.

Scouts have said he doesn’t even look like the same pitcher and that is in a good way.

Star-divide

Earlier today the Mets had to place Chris Young on the DL with tightness in his right shoulder.  He had an MRI and it showed some swelling in theback of that shoulder which would explain the tightness.  That is the same shoulder he injured in 2009 and this is already his 2nd stint on the DL this year.  Sandy Alderson has already said Young won’t be back when the 15 days are up.

This is exactly why Young was considered a high risk/high reward player.  When he has pitched he has been phenomenal and the best pitcher on the staff, but that has only been for a very limited number of games and who knows how long this one will keep him out for.

The Mets had to promote Pat Misch to fill the roster spot.

Well Dillon Gee here is your chance, don’t blow it.

Jenrry Mejia Has MCL Tear

The Buffalo Bisons have announced that New York Mets top prospect Jenrry Mejia has an MCL tear in his right elbow.

According to the release Mets Medical Director Dr. David Altchek found a complete tear in the right elbow and has suggested that Mejia have surgery to repair it.  The Mets are sending Mejia for a second opinion.

In five starts in 2011 Mejia was 1-2 with a 2.86 ERA in 28.1 innings. He only gave up 16 hits, but walked 14 while striking out 21.

Patients with a grade 1 tear of the MCL are likely to need 2-8 weeks of recovery while grade 3 patients (what Mejia is) will require surgery and “significantly” longer recovery time.

This is a major blow to an already pitching thin Mets. If there are any setbacks Mejia could wind up missing the whole season because surgery is all, but a guarantee at this point. Not only does this set back a top prospects development for a year, but it handcuffs the Mets for options of pitchers to call up. The Mets never seem to be able to catch a break.

If Mejia does have Tommy John surgery, he likely wouldn’t return to the mound for a year, costing him the rest of the 2011 season and part of the 2012 season. The surgery would probably push back his timetable to be able to pitch competitively in the big leagues until 2013.

D.J. Carrasco Optioned to Triple-A, Zach Lutz to the DL

The Mets activated starting pitcher Chris Young today from the DL to make his start Tuesday night against the Nationals.

A spot needed to be made on the 25-man roster and in a bit of a shocking move the Mets optioned D.J. Carrasco to Triple-A Buffalo.  Carrasco has been terrible in 2011 posting a 5.91 ERA and struggling with his control.

In an off-season in which the Mets front office was reluctant to give anyone more than a one year deal they were willing to give Carrasco a two year deal.

Carraso will be stretched out in Buffalo in attempt to convert him into a starter, a role he prefers.  Dillon Gee will be placed into the bullpen for the major league club. Gee has great control and should help fix some of the problems from earlier in the season.

In some minor league news Bisons’ third baseman Zach Lutz was placed on the DL with a right hamstring strain the same day Fernando Martinez was activated from the DL with the right hamstring strain.

How ironic is it that two most injured sluggers in the Mets’ pipeline swap spots on the DL with same injury on the same day. Stuff like this cannot be scripted.

Minor Leaguers Pounded With Injuries

There have been three injuries over the last couple of days to New York Mets minor leaguers that are note worthy.

After spraining his ankle on Sunday first baseman Allan Dykstra has not been able to go since and was placed on the Double-A 7-day disabled list.  Dykstra who was acquired in the off season for Eddie Kunz, was hitless in 7 at-bats this season, but true to form drew 2 walks.

It has become known that two pitchers will miss the entire season.

Hi-A left-hander James Fuller will need to undergo shoulder surgery and will not throw a pitch this season.  Fuller went 11-5 with 2.19 ERA between Savannah and St. Lucie.  I ranked Fuller as the 45th best prospect in the Mets system.

The other player affects the big league club more than anything by getting rid of some of the depth.  Veteran Boof Bonser will need to have Tommy John surgery next week. Bonser, who pitched pretty well in his first start before needing to leave with the injury, was probably one of the first in line to get the call up alongside Dillon Gee had the team needed a starter.

It was already known that Darrell Ceciliani was placed on the 7-day DL for Lo-A Savannah and that is day-to-day with a hamstring injury.

Sean Ratliff Needs Facial Surgery + More Minor League News

Adam Rubin brings us some prospecting news today….

  • The first tidbit is regarding top outfield prospect Sean Ratliff who was struck in the face with a foul ball while standing in the on deck circle during a minor league spring training game that will require facial surgery.  Ratliff broke six bones in the eye and sinus area that need repair.  He also needed fifteen stitches. It is still uncertain whether or not he will need a plate inserted although on a positive sign his vision has been unaffected.
  • Mets prospect Sean Ratliff in St. Lucie

  • In a bit of sad news the Mets officially released center fielder Manny Garcia.  I was a big fan of Garcia’s and thought he had a really bright future as a shortstop in the league who played good defense and caused havoc on the base paths.  It is pretty obvious things never really worked out for Garcia because of some on the field and off the field issues.  Wish him the best of luck in whatever he winds up doing.
  • The Mets seem prepared to be converting Brooklyn Cyclones closer Ryan Fraser to a starting role for the Savannah Sand Gnats this upcoming season.  Fraser saw time both in the rotation and in the pen in college and because of the great success he had after being drafted year with his plus fastball and slider it makes sense why the Mets would like to give him a shot in the rotation, but ultimately he probably winds back up in the pen.
  • A rare occurrence took place as Brad Holt fired five scoreless innings in his last spring training tune up start.  If there was ever a make or break year for a prospect it is this year for Holt.
  • In major league news Jason Isringhausen agreed to remain in extended spring training for a few more weeks.  The more arms the better.  In a way I hope the Mets will need him so I didn’t learn to spell his name for no reason.

Satin, Ratliff Promoted, Nieuwenhuis Hurt

Adam Rubin released his weekly Farm report today and it is pack filled with news. Here are some of the key notes to take from hit

  • OF Sean Ratliff and 2B and 6th round pick (not 25th round pick no clue where Rubin got that from) Josh Satin, who both recently returned from the FSL All-Star Game, have been promoted to Double-A Binghamton. This could mean that Reese Havens injury is more serious then just being day-to-day because the Mets wouldn’t put their two best 2nd base prospects on the same team competing for playing time.
  • The Buffalo Bisons and Binghamton Mets swapped players with OF/1B Lucas Duda, UTIL Jon Malo, and RP Roy Merritt have been promoted to Triple-A while 1B Marshall Hubbard went down to AA.
  • Top prospect Kirk Nieuwenhuis strained his shoulder making a diving catch.
  • Triple-A slugger Mike Hessman is on the DL with an injury to his right hand.
  • OF Carlos Guzman is on the DL with a torn meniscus
  • Manny Garcia is now manning the outfield for HiA St. Lucie now.
