Final: Buffalo 1 – Pawtucket 2

The Bisons and Red Sox finished up their suspended game from Saturday night needing to go into extra innings to decide the winner.

Chris Schwinden was pretty fantastic in his first Triple-A start.  Schwinden allowed just one run over five innings while striking out nine.  Schwinden somehow managed to throw just 76 pitches despite the nine Ks and three walks.  This was a good first test for Schwinden who I think still has the upside of a Tyler Clippard best-case scenario.  He is very underrated and a decent pitcher.  The bullpen did a  great job, but the Red Sox were able to peck away three singles in the bottom of the 10th against Manny Alvarez to win the game with a two out RBI.

The Bisons had the best chance to win the game in the top of the 9th, but could not capitalize on a Kirk Nieuwenhuis leadoff double.  Lucas Duda was able to advance him to 3rd base on a one out single, but it was Justin Turner who failed to get the job done by grounding into a double play to end the inning.

Players of the Game: 1. Chris Schwinden (3pts)  2. Kirk Nieuwenhuis (12pts)  3. Zach Lutz (9pts)

Final: Buffalo 3 – Scranton/WB 5

When Jenrry Mejia or Dillon Gee are not pitching this Buffalo team is fairly boring to follow as usual with the way the Mets handle their minor league teams.  Justin Turner, Kirk Nieuwenhuis, and Lucas Duda (along with Zach Lutz who did not play today) continue to be the only batters to get on base and do anything productive for the offense.  It was Mike O’Connor and Manny Acosta who combined to play the game in the 8th inning.  They must have been taken notes for the Amazins themselves to pull that one off.

Stars of the Game: 1. Kirk Nieuwenhuis (10pts)  2. Justin Turner (6pts)  3. Lucas Duda (1pt)

Final: Buffalo 2 – Scranton/WB 6

Zach Lutz(pictured) has quietly been putting together a very solid season for Buffalo.  Through seven games he has a slash line of .333/.400/.556, a 3:6 walk to strikeout ratio, and identical splits.  I’ve never questioned the talent Lutz has had it has always been the injuries that were a major concern for him.  His bat is good enough to play in the big leagues and if he keeps up good production at Triple-A maybe he will finally get some of the respect he deserves.  The strikeout issue is still there, but overall Captain Kirk Nieuwenhuis has performed better than I was anticipating.  Justin Turner is hitting like he is angry and with something to prove after be the odd man out in spring training and losing the 2nd base job.

Dylan Owen is getting another shot in Triple-A because of the injury to Boof Bonser and he got victimized by the long ball, both of the bat of Jorge Vazquez.  Outside of the two bombs he gave up he actually pitched pretty well in the short outing.  Taylor Tankersley is probably the next best lefty reliever the Mets have if one is needed for big league club and he has performed pretty well, but he will need to get the walks under control if he wants a shot at all this year with the control problems we’ve already seen on the team.

Stars of the Game: 1. Justin Turner (4pts) 2.Zach Lutz (8pts)  3. Kirk Nieuwenhuis (7pts)

Minor Leaguers Pounded With Injuries

There have been three injuries over the last couple of days to New York Mets minor leaguers that are note worthy.

After spraining his ankle on Sunday first baseman Allan Dykstra has not been able to go since and was placed on the Double-A 7-day disabled list.  Dykstra who was acquired in the off season for Eddie Kunz, was hitless in 7 at-bats this season, but true to form drew 2 walks.

It has become known that two pitchers will miss the entire season.

Hi-A left-hander James Fuller will need to undergo shoulder surgery and will not throw a pitch this season.  Fuller went 11-5 with 2.19 ERA between Savannah and St. Lucie.  I ranked Fuller as the 45th best prospect in the Mets system.

The other player affects the big league club more than anything by getting rid of some of the depth.  Veteran Boof Bonser will need to have Tommy John surgery next week. Bonser, who pitched pretty well in his first start before needing to leave with the injury, was probably one of the first in line to get the call up alongside Dillon Gee had the team needed a starter.

It was already known that Darrell Ceciliani was placed on the 7-day DL for Lo-A Savannah and that is day-to-day with a hamstring injury.

Final: Bisons 4 – Yankees 0

Another good effort for one of the top pitching prospects in the system.  Jenrry Mejia pitched into the 7th inning giving up no runs in the process.  He gave up just 3 hits for the second start in a row and generated 9 ground ball outs.  The bullpen had no trouble holding the lead getting the least seven outs with relative ease.

The offense scattered 12 hits which is why they were just able to muster just 4 runs despite getting 15 runners on base.  The Bisons were without outfielder Fernando Martinez who has a hamstring injury and is currently listed as day-to-day.  Ruben Tejada has been the most impressive hitter so far seemingly getting on base multiple times every game and driving in runs.

Stars of the Game: 1. Ruben Tejada (7pts) 2. Jenrry Mejia (5pts) 3. Justin Turner (1pt)

Final: Buffalo 8 – Pawtuckett 1

The Bisons returned the beatdown to the Red Sox putting up the early runs and never looking back.  In the first inning the Bisons had a stretch of five consecutive hits to score 3 runs.  The real prospects all got in on this action with Nick Evans and Lucas Duda setting the table only to be driven in by a Zach Lutz(pictured) double and Kirk Nieuwenuis single.  Evans and Lutz would add onto the lead with solo shots in the 2nd and 3rd inning.  Lutz has arguably been the hottest hitter in the system in the early goings with 4 ouf his 6 hits this season going for extra bases.

Dillon Gee was as economical as you could have asked for not hitting 100 pitches in his 7 innings of work.  He pounded the bottom of the zone all day with his fastball, keeping the ball on the ground, and getting great results giving up just 1 run on 3 hits.  With this good start Gee might have pitched his way into getting the spot start Sunday.

Players o the Game: 1. Zach Lutz (6pts)  2. Dillon Gee (2pts)   3. Nick Evans (1pt)

An all around beat down by Red Sox AAA affiliate.  Every pitcher on the Bisons struggled to some degree with Taylor Tankersley being the only one of five pitchers to put up a scoreless inning, but it was not a smooth inning.  Kirk Nieuwenhuis(pictured) walked again and scored a run after hitting a leadoff double in the 7th inning.  Zach Lutz had the only multi-hit game belting 2 doubles and reaching for a third time on a base on balls.

Stars of the Game: 1. Zach Lutz (3pts)  2. Kirk Nieuwenhuis (6pts)  3. Fernando Martinez (4pts)
