Archive for Brooklyn Cyclones

The other day I got a job working for the Staten Island Yankees BOO! But the good news is it means I am going to get to see a lot of New York Penn League and more specifically the Brooklyn Cyclones.

The Yankees and Cyclones see a lot of each other including playing opening day on June 17th at Richmond County Ballpark.

I am going to get a lot of opportunities to the Mets top draft picks now.  More so than previous years when I was only able to see players like Cory Vaughn, Ike Davis, Reese Havens, and Kirk Nieuwenhuis a handful of times.

With the talent in this year’s draft class I am most likely going to get to see a lot of top prospects.  There is also a possibility the Mets put 2009 2nd round pick Steven Matz in Brooklyn so I can watch him.

Not to mention I’ll get to make some guap while scouting some players.

With Wally Backman moving up to Double-A to coach the Binghamton Mets, Rich Donnelly has been named manager of the Brooklyn Cyclones to fill this void.

I do not know much about Donnelly’s managerial skills, but he has a lot of experience managing teams including being on a World Series staff with the Florida Marlins in 1997.  There is a very heart warming story you can read about Donnelly and his daughter on the Dodgers website.

Coming into the season as the Mets 6th best prospect everything was looking good for Brad Holt.  He was moving through the system quicker then expected, but then things started to take a free fall for Holt.  He started the year off hurt and when he came back things just went as bad as they possibly could.  In 10 games he has gone 1-5 with a staggering 10.20 ERA.  He is giving up nearly a walk per inning and giving up well over resulting in his ugly 2.15 WHIP.  In his first two seasons in the minors Holt had displayed pretty good command and he is still getting his fair share of strikeouts so I’d have to think Holt is still feeling the effects of his injury whether it is causing him to alter his mechanics or what, but he is definitely not 100%.

Moves:

Brad Holt transferred from AA (Binghamton) to HiA (St. Lucie)

Brahiam Maldonado transferred from HiA (St. Lucie) to AA (Binghamton)

John Maine transferred from AA (Binghamton) to AAA (Buffalo)

Juan Centeno transferred from AA (Binghamton) to SSA (Brooklyn)

I am really excited to see the outfield headlined by Darrell Ceciliani and Cory Vaughn and then J.B. Brown on the infield, but none of the other position players really pop out at me.

I also want to see if Angel Cuan has made any adjustments since last year and then the 2010 draft picks especially Chad Sheppard, Jonathan Kountis, and Ryan Fraser.

I attended the Brooklyn Cyclones vs. Staten Island Yankees game on July the 12th and despite putting up a great record and being in first place I saw more negatives prospect wise with the Cyclones than positives.

Mark Cohoon, who at the time was leading the league in wins and strikeouts, had his worst outing to date and did not look good at all.  He has some deception in his delivery, which is the likely cause for all his success at the lower levels.  He has a fringe fastball sitting 85-89 with some movement I believe he hit the 90′s only once coming in at 91 in the first inning.  He has a solid curveball in the mid 70′s that he rarely uses, but uses effectively.  His change up was his worst pitch by far.  It was around 83 with almost no late movement and it got hit hard by the Yankees line up.  He is either going to have to take more off the pitch or get more movement for it to be effective. He uses two different pickoff moves, 1 which is a little check over move and the other the typical lefty balk pickoff that he used to pickoff two batters, but one of them made it to 2nd safe thanks to an errand throw from Alex Gregory.

The offense wasn’t too impressive at all.  The hardest hit ball came from John Servidio who hit it into the left-center gap for a double berfore being thrown out at 3rd base.  My favorite Cyclone Nick Santomauro is a great athlete.  Has a pretty solid lower half, but more room for growth in his upper body, has a nice swing, and great approach at the plate working the count on 3 different occasions despite having littel success.  If he keeps up this same play though he should see serious improvemnt in his nubmers.  One thing he must work on is his throwing accuracy which was terrible.

The most exciting player on the field for either team was Brooklyn’s Luis Nieves.  He is extremely small probably slightly below his listed 5’11, but plays amazing defense.  He made an error on a routine play, but came back the very next play and turned an amazing double play jumping over the incoming Yankee and throwing a bullet to the first baseman.  He then made a play going to his right, taking him into left field, and making another perfect throw to the first baseman in plenty of time.  At the plate he is a pesky hitter, think Luis Castillo at short, he has to hit more to be a real prospect.

Other notes:

  • Doc Doyle was 2-3 with a walk, but both were blop hits that he was jammed on.  He wasn’t very impressive.
  • Mike Lynn looks like Dylan Owen v2.0
  • Luis Rivera is listed 6’1 190, but looks more like 6’0 215+ lbs.
  • The picture is of Robbie Shields who was at the game, but didn’t play.

Flurry of moves coming out of St. Lucie today.

  • SP Nick Carr was moved to the DL.
  • SS Matt Bouchard was moved down to SSA – Brooklyn Cyclones
  • RP Emary Federeick was promoted to AA Binghamton as was Jacob Ruckle.
  • C Tony Maccani placed on DL.

In Savannah Robert Carson has been added to the SAL All-Star Roster.

The Mets also claimed relief pitcher Arutro Lopez off of waivers from the San Diego Padres.  He had some success at AAA, but was awful in his 4 game call-up.

The Brooklyn Cyclones have released their official roster for opening day starting the 19th  I expect some changes to be made with new draftees being added, but out of the players below I am most excited to see: Dock Doyle, Nick Giarraputo, Alex Gregory, Seth Williams, Angel CuanJohn Church, and Wes Wrenn.
