Final: Binghamton 4 – New Hampshire 1

Boxscore

The BMets offense clubbed three homeruns of the New Hampshire starter, but scored just four runs.  Michael Fisher got the offense going by tying the game up at one in the bottom of the  2nd hitting a bomb to right field.  He was followed up by Jordany Valdespin‘s solo shot and Josh Satin‘s two run shot in the 4th inning that both were barely able to clear the wall.

This is the type of start from Robert Carson(pictured) that makes me tentative.  He continues to have great success, but he his control was a little erratic.  He did not walk any batters last game so this one can go down as a wash for now.   He did do a great job generating ground balls which I love and did a good job settling down after running into some trouble in both the 1st and 2nd inning.

Stars of the Game: 1. Michael Fisher (5pts)  2. Josh Satin (8pts)  3. Robert Carson (4pts)

An absolute pitcher’s duel between the two right handers in this one.  Brad Holt(pictured) went 7 brilliant innings scattering just 4 hits and 1 walk while striking out 5.  He got an oustanding 10 ground ball outs.  It appears thus far that Holt has gotten his confidence back after the Arizona Fall League that was his real problem last year with scouts saying his stuff still looked fine.  Unfortunately for Holt the New Hampshire starter was pitching him pitch for pitch for the whole game up until the 8th inning when Brahiam Maldonado took him deep for his 3rd of the year.  The BMets took a shutout lead into the 9th inning when Eric Niesen‘s control issues continued as he walked the tying run on base and then gave up a 2-run jack to blow it.  The only other BMets player besides Maldonado to even reach base in this game was Jesus Feliciano who mustered up a single in the 1st inning.

Stars of the Game: 1. Brad Holt (4pts)  2. Brahiam Maldonado (5pts)  3. Jesus Feliciano (1pt)

Final: Binghamton 2 – New Hampshire 3

Mark Cohoon is a bulldog on the mound who just gets outs.  At some point people are going to need to look him as the real deal.  I don’t think it is a stretch at all to say he has a very very good chance to be a back of the rotation starter and not be regulated as a LOOGY out of the pen.  He has great command (1 walk), pitches deep into games(7 innings), and keeps the ball on the ground(10 ground ball outs).  Not flashy, but he could very well turn into a pitcher like Travis Wood. Would not be shocked to see him promoted to Buffalo soon with the Bonser injury.  It’s a shame Rule V pick Ricky Brooks couldn’t close out the game to get Cohoon his first win when he’s deserved to win both games.

The offense drew some walks, but continued its poor hitting and even worse hitting with runners in scoring position.  Michael Fisher and Eric Campbell had multi-hit games while five batters took 0-fers.  Jordany Valdespin drew yet another walk, but was caught stealing for the first time trying to advance to second.

Stars of the Game: 1. Mark Cohoon (3pts)  2. Michael Fisher (2pts)  3. Eric Campbell (3pts)

Minor Leaguers Pounded With Injuries

There have been three injuries over the last couple of days to New York Mets minor leaguers that are note worthy.

After spraining his ankle on Sunday first baseman Allan Dykstra has not been able to go since and was placed on the Double-A 7-day disabled list.  Dykstra who was acquired in the off season for Eddie Kunz, was hitless in 7 at-bats this season, but true to form drew 2 walks.

It has become known that two pitchers will miss the entire season.

Hi-A left-hander James Fuller will need to undergo shoulder surgery and will not throw a pitch this season.  Fuller went 11-5 with 2.19 ERA between Savannah and St. Lucie.  I ranked Fuller as the 45th best prospect in the Mets system.

The other player affects the big league club more than anything by getting rid of some of the depth.  Veteran Boof Bonser will need to have Tommy John surgery next week. Bonser, who pitched pretty well in his first start before needing to leave with the injury, was probably one of the first in line to get the call up alongside Dillon Gee had the team needed a starter.

It was already known that Darrell Ceciliani was placed on the 7-day DL for Lo-A Savannah and that is day-to-day with a hamstring injury.

This marks back-to-back games that Brahiam Maldonado has gone deep.  This season he has even more so marked his place as an all or nothing hitter with 7 strikeouts in 23 at-bats and 2 of his 4 hits going over the fence.  The offense as a whole did a good job hitting two tough prospects with only two hitters taking 0-fers (Eric Campbell and Raul Reyes) and five different players driving in a run.  You know it’s a minor league game when you see the lack of fundamentals that leads to 4 errors for each team and 2 passed balls for the BMets.

Josh Stinson was just okay today and not dominating AA like he should be.  It is not going to be a start I complain about with the 6 strikeouts and just 1 walk, but the 8 hits are a bit high.  He does have some shady defense behind him with only maybe three or four good defensive players in the field, but still not acceptable for someone who should be in AAA right now.  Chris Schwinden(pictured) had another good relief performance was in line for the win until the defense hurt John Lujan as well causing him to blow the game.

Players of the Game: 1. Jordany Valdespin (7pts)  2. Josh Satin (6pts)  3. Brahiam Maldonado (2pts)

Final: BMets 3 – SeaWolves 7

Boxscore

Brahiam Maldonado made a mistake in the 3rd inning misplaying a line drive allowing the run to score from second base, but would make up for it in the very next half inning.  Eric Campbell got aboard with two outs in the inning to keep it alive and then Maldonado crushed a monster shot to left field which would give the BMets their only lead of the game.  He has always had legit power just has not been able to put together the complete package.  Kai Gronauer(pictured), who threw out the only attempted base stealer in the game, extended to lead to two runs with a solo shot in the 5th inning, but the bullpen led by Eric Niesen would blow the game.

Brandon Moore was pitching fairly well, but rain into some serious trouble in the 5th inning giving up two doubles and being pulled with a runner on second in favor of Roy Merritt to get the lefty-lefty match-up at a crucial part of the game.  Merritt wound up walking his assignment and then allowed the next batter to single in the tying run and things would just get worse.  Niesen started the 7th inning with a walk and then gave the SeaWolves the lead with a single and double to score a run before being pulled.  Erik Turgeon would allow both inherited baserunners to score as well as one of his own to conlcude the four run inning and put the game out of reach.

Stars of the Game: 1. Kai Gronauer (3pts) 2. Brahiam Maldonado (2pts) 3.  Jordany Valdespin (1pt)

Final: BMets 0 – Aeros 1

Boxscore

Pitching was the name of the game with both offenses being mostly non-existent.  The BMets offense got just two batters into scoring position all game, one of which was a two out double off the bat of Eric Campbell in the 4th inning.  The only players besides Campbell to reach base all game were Carlos Guzman and Kai Gronauer who both singled and Allan Dykstra who walked.

It’s interesting to note with Dykstra he was pinch hit for by Jon Malo when a lefty was brought in to pitch.  The in-game situation seems to be the reason he was pulled with the BMets getting the first runner on base and Malo was used to bunt the runner over.  I would really hope they aren’t going to try and run a platoon with him.

After struggling in AA last year Robert Carson(pictured) tried to right the ship with a very good opening to the year.  The defense would save Carson in the 3rd inning after he balked the runner over to second base Raul Reyes threw the runner out trying to advance to third on a single by the next batter, but would then cost him the game in the 4th.  After allowing two men on with one out Carson induced what should have been the inning ending double play, but as Dykstra messed up the throw to second base sailing it into the outfield allowing the lone run of the game to score.

Chris Schwinden, who has made the move back into the pen, was terrific today striking out 4 of the 7 batters he faced.

Players of the Game: 1. Robert Carson (3pts)  2. Eric Campbell (2pts)  3. Chris Schwinden (1pt)
