2011 Top 50 Prospects: Prospects 31-40
Posted by: | CommentsAll grades are subject to change. You can find a full listing of the Top 50 Prospects of 2011 Archive Page.
QUICK PRIMER ON GRADE MEANINGS:
Grade A prospects are the elite. They have a good chance of becoming stars or superstars. Almost all Grade A prospects develop into major league regulars, if injuries or other problems don’t intervene. Note that is a major “if” in some cases.
Grade B prospects have a good chance to enjoy successful careers. Some will develop into stars, some will not. Most end up spending several years in the majors, at the very least in a marginal role.
Grade C prospects are the most common type. These are guys who have something positive going for them, but who may have a question mark or three, or who are just too far away from the majors to get an accurate feel for. A few Grade C guys, especially at the lower levels, do develop into stars. Many end up as role players or bench guys. Some don’t make it at all.

Tovar’s best tool can not be seen or measured by these numbers as his defense is off the charts. He has received rave reviews from everyone that has seen him play the field making circus plays look routine. He has gold glove potential defense, but his biggest question marks will always be his size (5’10 160 is a generous listing) and bat.

This is a situation where if the prospect fails I am putting it on the Mets’ shoulders. Carson was doing okay, but not dominating in St. Lucie so they move him up to AA where he gets bombed. Carson still has the stuff to succeed, but did terrible in the “AA test” so a move to the pen might be in store.

While Rodriguez is a little old for Kingsport he finally began to put his tools together last year. I am always a little weary of the power numbers prospects put up in Kingsport, but I am trying to stay positive of the former second round pick. Next year will decide if he is a real prospect or not.

I was high on Allen entering 2010, but he was just awful for St. Lucie. He walked more (54) than he struckout (53) and did not get nearly as many groundballs as he had in the past. He gets the benefit of the doubt because he was pitching with a back injury, but I am not too excited about his potential anymore.

The older German product started coming around with the bat in 2010. He is already an average to above average defensive catcher and if he can sustain the new offensive production he could develop into a major league back up catcher.

Campbell has very quietly turned into a nice bat for the organization. He plays adequate defense at third and has a good approach at the plate that held up in the jump to AA.

The results were okay on the surface, but not spectacular. He is going to need to up the strikeouts and the stuff suggests he will do it in the future with already a low 90′s fastball and flashes of plus change-up. The projection is there for him to become a legitimate prospect only time will tell.

One of the few Mets overslots in recent years actually pitched well during his brief time flashing good K rates and keeping the balls on the ground, but was suspended for PED’s. Will need to move quickly when he returns.

One of the big international free agents in 2010 for the Mets. Sanchez is a big third baseman with plus to plus-plus raw power, but hwo might need to move to first base. He was the 15th best Latin American prospect.

The other main attraction from the IFA class. Lupo was the 25th best ranked prospect form Latin America and is also considered to have plus to plus-plus raw power.

Mike Pelfrey has been something of a disappointment to a lot of Mets fans, not developing into the Number One starter of their dreams. He’s a good pitcher though, and is an interesting case study for prospect analysis. Mike Pelfrey was an extremely successful starting pitcher at Wichita State for three years. A local kid from Wichita, he had a great freshman year in 2003 (10-2, 2.49, 98/15 K/BB in 105 innings), then followed that up with even better sophomore (11-2, 2.19, 125/24 K/BB) and junior (12-3, 1.93, 143/30 K/BB in 140 innings) seasons, establishing himself as one of the premier talents in the 2005 draft class.
MLB.com – German Catching Prospect Kai Gronauer is Finding His Way With the Mets
The Solingen Alligators play their home games on a modest diamond in western Germany, soccer country, directly adjacent to — of course — a soccer field. Most of Kai Gronauer’s childhood friends preferred that sport; Gronauer himself limited his athletic pursuits to soccer and tennis until the age of 10. But one friend in particular suggested he try baseball, and the young man took to it.
Metsblog – I Don’t Know What to Make of Kirk Nieuwenhuis
Kirk Nieuwenhuis is a big kid. There is no getting around it.
Frankly, he looks like an actor playing baseball.
In talking to people around the team, I can’t get a read on how they view him. There are people who like his potential, others who are not quite sure yet.

ESPN NY – A History of Mets and Rule 5 Draft
With Brad Emaus perhaps the frontrunner to emerge as second baseman, and with Terry Collins speaking positively about fellow Rule 5 pick Pedro Beato as a candidate for the bullpen, Major League Baseball provided ESPNNewYork.com with a list of the Mets’ Rule 5 picks in the major league phase over the last two decades, as well as their fates.
Nieuwenhuis and Gronauer Invited to Spring Training

Most excited to watch Captain Kirk of these two. There has been a lot of talk of him not going to be able to handle big league pitching and their high fastballs so this, albeit a small sample size, will give us some insight into how he will fare. Kai Gronauer is extremely solid defensively so any glimpses he shows with the bat is just a plus.
Mark Cohoon Goes to AA, Huge Roster Changes for Gnats
Posted by: | CommentsMark Cohoon, who has dominated the SAL and whom I talked about before, has been promoted. Instead of going to HiA St. Lucie the Mets decided to promote him straight to Double-A Binghamton. I think this is a good call by the Mets. He is an older, smarter pitcher who probably would have dominated the Florida State League just as he dominated the South Atlantic League so why not give him the biggest challenge for a minor leaguer which is the move to AA.
There was a plethora of other moves made to go along with this including top prospect Wilmer Flores getting the bump from LoA Savannah to HiA St. Lucie. There were 6 other Sand Gnats who became St. Lucie Mets today; Juan Lagares, Brandon Moore, Rafael Fernandez, Kai Gronauer, Erik Turgeron, and Michael Fisher.
To make room for all these players a lot of players had to be shifted around:
- Wilfredo Tovar was transferred from the St. Lucie roster to the Savannah roster.
- Brandon Sage was activated and placed in Savannah roster.
- Juan Torres was transferred from the St. Lucie roster to the Savannah roster.
- R.J. Harris was transferred from the Brooklyn roster to the Savannah roster.
- Ryan Mollica was transferred from the St. Lucie roster to the Savannah roster.
- Gabriel Zavalawas added to the Savannah roster.
- Travis Ozga was transferred from the Kingsport roster to the Savannah roster.
- Marcos Tabata was transferred from the St. Lucie roster to the Savannah roster.
More Mets Injuries
Posted by: | CommentsBecause enough Mets aren’t already hurt there is new today that J.J. Putz will need to go on the DL because he needs surgery on his pitching elbow. If everything goes correctly and he hells PERFECTLY he can possibly return in 6-8 weeks. The odds are he will likely be out longer and the odds are when he returns he will not be as effective as he was in the past. It’s your time to step up Bobby Parnell.

The Savannah Sand Gnats are also being flooded with injuries as prospect Juan Lagares who was having a pretty solid season (.290/.324/.355) is out for the season with an injury to his right wrist. Starting German catcher Kai Gronauer has also been placed on the DL as has 1st baseman Eric Campbell. To fill the roster spots catcher Ralph Henriquez and third baseman Stefan Welch have been called up from extended spring training.
