Mets Go Overslot For Two High Schoolers

Earlier today the Mets first decided to go overslot to sign 15th round selection Phillips Evans for $650,000. Evans is a shortstop from California high school who was thought to surely be attending San Diego State because of such a low round draft pick. According to Baseball America this was “the highest bonus ever paid by New York outside of the first two rounds”. Evans defense is in question, but has wowed people with his bat very recently.

Shortly after the Mets signed another shortstop, 16th round pick Brad Marquez, to a $325,000 bonus. Because Marquez is a two sport athlete the bonus will be spread out over three years. Marquez will also be allowed to continue to play football for Texas A&M with the Mets paying for his education. Marquez is a very exciting player with great speed.

…These are the types of signing that turns the Mets draft class from pretty good to very good. It is no guarantee either of these players will pan out and make it to the bigs, but these are two perfect examples of high reward risks. I thought there was a shot at Marquez, however, I felt the Mets had no shot at Evans. He is clearly the big splash of the later rounds. Now we wait for Brandon Nimmo to sign…

2011 Signing Bonus Updates

Baseball America updated their draft database with official signing bonuses for most of the signed draft picks.

It was already known that Cory Mazzoni signed for $437,500 and Danny Muno signed for just $10,000, Michael Fulmer‘s number is not out there yet, but the next highest price tag was 10th rounder Matt Budgell who signed for an overslot deal of $225,000. Following Budgell is 7th round pick Cole Frenzel who signed for $200,000 as a draft eligible sophomore. Jack Leathersich signed for a slot deal of $110,000 out of the 5th round.

That brings the confirmed bonuses up to $982,500 and when you account for Fulmer and the other signed players they are probably right around the $2,000,000 mark, which doesn’t count Joe Tuschak who announced he was going to sign. The Mets spent $4.7 million last year so Brandon Nimmo‘s bonus will put them right at that bonus and if they sign some of their overslot high school picks they will blow that number out of the water.

Mets Sign No. 44 Overall Pick Michael Fulmer

According to Michael Fulmer himself on twitter, although he has not officially signed a contract with the Mets he has agreed to one.

[blackbirdpie url="http://twitter.com/MFulmer12/status/84115889561157632"]

This is big news for the Mets.

While I fully expected to Fulmer to sign at some point I did not think he would sign this early. Fulmer has signed early enough so that he can get some time in this, most likely in the GCL, and have a chance to pitch in full season ball next year with Savannah.

Last year’s No. 44 overall pick Nick Castellanos received a $3,450,000, but that was well over slot which was around $800k. Would not be shocked if Fulmer pulled in around 900k on his deal, similar to the deals signed by Peter Tago and Taijun Walker last year around this pick.

For those who still don’t know much about Fulmer he features a fastball that has topped out at 97 mph and usually ranges from 92-94 mph that he compliments with a curve/slider (there’s a little debate over what it actually is, but most call it a curve) that is slightly above-average right now projects as a true plus pitch moving forward.

Mets Sign Craig Missigman, Jack Leathersich Close, Cole Frenzel Wants Overslot, Other News

[blackbirdpie url="http://twitter.com/mwilliams2929/status/83321476496883713"]

  • The twitter account says it is the official page of Spartanburg Methodist College Baseball, the school Missigman had committed to, so this is likely indeed true.
Missigman has been as high as 89 mph with his fastball and at 6’4″ 170 lbs. there is still some projection left in his frame. There is not too much other info out there on him other than he throws a 70 mph curve ball and 80 mph change up. This isn’t on the level as going overslot for someone like Mason Robbins, who is commanding a HUGE bonus, but I am sure Missigman got a decent payday and is a nice pickup by the Mets.
  • The Mets transaction page says they have signed non-drafted free agent catcher Tyson Blaser, but he actually signed a deal with the Yankees and not the Mets.
  • The Mets did, however, sign international free agent Isaac Monrroy out of Panama. The 20-year-old left handed pitcher has been assigned to the GCL Mets and has since made two appearances, pitching 1.2 perfect innings.
  • Another player the Mets have signed is right handed pitcher Jared West out of Stephen F. Austin. Jared is a 6’1″ 180 lbs,. 22-year-old that has also been assigned to the GCL Mets. He pitched a perfect inning in the teams home opener.
During his time in Stephen F. Austin, Jared finished with the 2nd most wins in school history (14) and 6th most strikeouts (160). In his senior year he led the team with 7 wins and a 3.08 ERA. In 79 innings pitched he gave up 85 hits, struckout 58, and walked 38.
  • 5th round draft pick Jack Leathersich has indicated numerous times on twitter that he is very close to signing. He recently pitched .2 innings in a Cape Cod League game and gave up 2 runs on 2 hits and 2 walks.
  • In a Q&A 7th round pick Cole Frenzel did with the Daily Wildcat he inidcated that he is asking for overslot and waiting for the Mets decision:

Right now, I haven’t signed. I’m asking over slot money for the round I was drafted — I think slot is $125,000 and I’m asking a lot more than that — so I’m waiting for them to get it approved to offer me what they’re going to offer me. After they get it approved, I’ll either take that and go play pro ball, and if I don’t like it I’ll just come back to school and hopefully have another great year with my teammates and try to get to Omaha.

I’ve talked to the scout that drafted me, he’s called me two or three times a week just to see how I’m doing and what’s going. I’ve been in contact with them, I’m just waiting for them to get that contract approved then get back to me so I can make that decision.

As a draft eligible sophomore, the Mets had to have known that Frenzel would require a little overslot and by picking him in the 7th round it indicates that they are confident the two sides will agree to terms. Frenzel has some power potential and showed good plate discipline and on-base skills in college, which makes him look like a guy that Alderson and DePodesta will really want to get into the organization. He is a guy that played shortstop in high school and there has been talk about a possible move to third for him, so he has more athleticism than your average first baseman.

Joe Tuschak has Huge Day and then Commits to Mets

What a day and end to a high school career it was for New York Mets 6th round pick Joe Tuschak.

Tushak’s high school team, the Northern York Polar Bears, were playing for their first state championship ever and it was Tuschak’s grand slam in the 4th inning that gave the Polar Bears the lead that they would hold on to win their first title. The video of Tushak’s long home run to dead center can be seen here.

After the game Tushak gave an interview and stated that he has decided to forgo his college career at Coastal Carolina and turn pro.

The good offer the Mets made is most likely a slot offer which is right around how much Tuschak should get, maybe a tiny bit over slot. The Gulf Coast season starts soon so he better sign that contract ASAP so he won’t have to miss too much time.

John Sickels on the Mets Draft

The Mets have promised to be more aggressive in the draft, and this is a good start.

1) Brandon Nimmo, OF, Wyoming HS: He’ll want a lot of money to skip college ball at Arkansas, but I think it is worth it. He’s got above average tools across the board, good plate discipline, and more polish than we have any right to expect given his background.

2) Cory Mazzoni, RHP, North Carolina State: Low-90s fastball, sometimes faster, good breaking ball, good splitter, interesting stats. Note outstanding K/BB and K/IP ratios. 3.30 ERA, 137/29 K/BB in 115 IP.

5) Jack Leathersich, LHP, UMass-Lowell: Terrific numbers, hits 95 in short stints, but rough mechanics and problems with breaking ball likely limit him to bullpen work, though he could be overpowering in that role. 1.62 ERA, 126/27 K/BB in 89 IP.

7) Cole Frenzel, 1B, Arizona: Physically strong but hasn’t hit for a lot of power yet. Draft-eligible sophomore so he has some leverage. .346/.460/.465 with three homers, 31 walks.

10) Matthew Budgell, RHP, California HS: Projectable, velocity inconsistent, Cal State Fullerton recruit. Could go much higher in ’14 draft if he goes to school.

SUMMARY: I like this. Nimmo and Fulmer provide plenty of upside at the top, while college picks Mazzoni, Verrett, Pill, and Muno could all advance pretty quickly through the system. There are some more speculative/upside choices mixed in, and if the Mets are really serious about spending money they could see what it takes to steer some of the teen-round-tough-sign picks away from college.

Head over to John’s blog to read the rest of his review.

This is a good, fair assesment of the Mets draft. Sickels has been one of the biggest pro-Nimmo experts so it is no shock to see him saying only good things about the pick.

I plan to do a similar type evaluation of the Mets draft class.

47th Round • 1422nd Overall – Cole Limbaugh, RHP | School: Childersburg HS | Height: 6’4″ Weight: 180 | DOB: 5/4/93

Committed to Samford University.

Cole Limbaugh (P/Util, 6’5, 180, Childersburg High School, Childersburg, Ala.) is a tall, athletic two way player from Childersburg High School. Limbaugh is a high velocity right-handed pitcher who also handles the bat well as the top hitter on his high school team as a junior.

“Cole has really developed over the last couple of years,” Samford head coach Casey Dunn said. “We had him at our camp this summer and he performed really well on the mound and at the plate. He has a great frame that projects well for the future, but we expect him to contribute right away.”

As a junior, he led the team in hitting with a .388 batting average, 29 RBI and six home runs. He also scored 26 runs and stole eight bases. On the mound he struck out 51 hitters in 43 innings with a 3.20 earned run average on his way to being named his team’s Most Valuable Player. Limbaugh was equally impressive his sophomore season where he was honored as both All-County and State honors. He hit .376, with two home runs, 39 RBI, 29 runs scored and nine stolen bases. On the mound he struck out 26 hitters to only five walks, posted a 2.83 earned run average with a record of 2-0 with four saves.

Limbaugh’s versatility is expected to be a great asset with the limited roster.

“With the rule change the last couple of years limiting the roster to 35 players it is more helpful if you have guys who can legitimately help on the mound and as a hitter,” Dunn said. “Cole is very athletic and has shown some defensive ability and power at the plate.”

Perfect Game lists his top velocity at 87 mph. Looks like he is not only a two-way player, but a two-sport player as well serving as his HS football teams quarterback.
