Mock Draft Version 2.0

pirates

1. Pittsburgh Pirates – Gerrit Cole, RHP (UCLA)

Why: The Pirates still have made no indication of what they will do, but in the end I still think they will fall in love with Cole’s potential much like they did with Tailon last year.

Last mock: Gerrit Cole

Seattle

2. Seattle Mariners – Anthony Rendon, 3B (Rice)

Why: Mariners fans’ dreams of a Rendon-Nick Franklin-Dustin Ackley-Justin Smoak infield are still alive. If all of those guys pan out, WOW.

Last mock: Anthony Rendon

Diamondbacks

3. Arizona Diamondbacks – Danny Hultzen, LHP (Virginia)

Why: This is their guy. I would be absolutely shocked if they went in another direction should the first two teams pass on him.

Last mock: Danny Hulzten

Seattle

4. Baltimore Orioles – Dylan Bundy, RHP (OwassoHS,OK)

Why: I think he’ll sign anyway, but I can’t see Dylan passing up the chance to pitch with his brother. This fit is just too perfect and at No. 4 Bundy could still be a steal, he is that good.

Last mock: Dylan Bundy

Seattle

5. Kansas City Royals – Taylor Jungmann, RHP (Texas)

Why: Call this pick a hunch. The Royals took Colon a bit higher than he should have last year because of how close he is to the majors and Jungmann gives a similar type of feel. I still think this pick is the key to how the first round will fall.

Last mock: Trevor Bauer

Nationals

6. Washington Nationals – Trevor Bauer, RHP (UCLA)

Why: The Nationals are just glad Bauer is still available with this pick. They’ll waste no time picking him and look like bandits in a few years.

Last mock: Alex Meyer

Diamondbacks

7. Arizona Diamondbacks – Francisco Lindor, SS (HS, FL)

Why: Keeping this pick the same. Starting to think there is a chance they go for Alex Meyer if the Nationals don’t pick him, but I like Lindor for them more.

Last mock: Francisco Lindor

Indians

8. Cleveland Indians – Matt Barnes, RHP (UConn)

Why: Still see them going college pitcher. Matt Barnes fits their style a little bit better of very successful college pitcher with plus stuff and a workhorse build like they have taken the last two years (See White, Alex and Pomeranz,Drew)

Last mock: Sonny Gray

Cubs

9. Chicago Cubs – Bubba Starling, OF (Gardner, KS)

Why: No change here. Too much talent for the Cubies to pass up on.

Last mock: Bubba Starling

Padres

10. San Diego Padres – Sonny Gray, RHP (Vanderbilt)

Why: Gray falls down a few spots, but I can’t see him falling down much father than this. He won’t last past No. 13 at the Mets.

Last mock: Jed Bradley

Astros

11. Houston Astros – Alex Meyer, RHP (Kentucky)

Why: The Astros have a history of shocking us with their first round pick so why not. Meyer definitely has the talent to be picked this high, but has a lot of question marks.

Last mock: Taylor Jungmann

Brewers

12. Milwaukee Brewers – Taylor Guerrieri, RHP (HS, SC)

Why: I have a real good feeling about this pick just like I have a real good feeling about Guerrieri.

Last mock: Taylor Guerrieri

Mets

13. New York Mets – Jed Bradley, LHP (Georgie Tech)

Why: They could use a good lefty pitching prospect and the best college one falls into their lap. They seem to be heavy on Gray and Jungmann if either of them fall here as well.

Last mock: Matt Barnes

Marlins

14. Florida Marlins – Archie Bradley, RHP (HS, KS)

Why: Last time I said I wouldn’t rule out Archie Bradley with this pick and now I have him going here. This is probably as low as Bradley falls.

Last mock: Blake Swihart

Brewers

15. Milwaukee Brewers – Mikie Mahtook, OF (LSU)

Why: There is some buzz that if Mahtook is available here the Brewers will jump all over him. It makes some sense considering this is an unprotected pick.

Last mock: Archie Bradley

Dodgers

16. Los Angeles Dodgers – Javier Baez, SS/3B (HS, FL)

Why: Another popular selection I am starting to sip the kool-aid on. It allows the Dodgers to go after the upside like they like while still paying slot.

Last mock: Tyler Anderson

Angels

17. Los Angeles Angels – Daniel Norris, LHP (HS, TN)

Why: I still like Springer for them, but their love of high school players has gotten the best of me. Norris is the best prep lefty in the draft.

Last mock: George Springer

Athletics

18. Oakland Athletics – Cory Spangenberg, 3B/OF (Indian River State)

Why: I don’t know if Spangenberg’s skill set fits better with any teams draft strategy than the A’s. A college player with a great hit tool, speed, and a lot of helium for Billy Beane to scoop up. George Springer is a strong possibility.

Last mock: Daniel Norris

Red Sox

19. Boston Red Sox – George Springer, OF (UConn)

Why: Can the Red Sox really be that lucky? If Springer falls this far he is head an shoulders the steal of the first round and who else would get that steal other than the Red Sox.

Last mock: Andrew Susac

Rockies

20. Colorado Rockies – Kolten Wong, 2B (Hawaii)

Why: Right after I put him here last time Perfect Game said if Wong is available for this pick the Rockies won’t pass him up and everyone has seemed to agree since then.Last mock: Kolten Wong

Blue Jays

21. Toronto Blue Jays – CJ Cron, 1B (Utah)

Why: The toughest pick for me. I really like Baez for them, but with him off the board things get a bit tricky. Why not add one of the best offensive bats in the draft to this team, as if their offense isn’t already scary enough.

Last mock: Javier Baez

Cardinals

22. St. Louis Cardinals – Levi Michael, SS (UNC)

Why: Another tough one. While the Cardinals like to draft whoever falls to them I think Bell’s price tag is going to move him completely out of the first round. Michael doesn’t fit their draft strategy that well, but he fits nicely in their system. Jose Fernandez is a possibility.

Last mock: Josh Bell

Nationals

23. Washington Nationals – Jose Fernandez,RHP (HS,FL)

Why: He is still a nice fit for them here.

Last mock: Jose Fernandez

Rays

24. Tampa Bay Rays – Robert Stephenson, RHP (HS, CA)

Why: Stephenson makes a lot of sense for the Rays. Sometimes players become a popular pick for a good reason.

Last mock: Brian Goodwin

Padres

25. San Diego Padres – Blake Swihart, C (HS, NM)

Why: The Padres are a team that isn’t afraid to spend money. They have taken top high school talent in the past and Swihart is only available here because of bonus demands.

Last mock: Mikie Mahtook

Red Sox

26. Boston Red Sox - Andrew Susac, C (Oregon State)

Why: The Red Sox can seemingly do no wrong in the draft and pick up Susac later in the draft and come away looking like the early winners of the 2011 draft.

Last mock: Matt Purke

Reds

27. Cincinnati Reds – Tyler Anderson, LHP (Oregon)

Why: Anderson fits the Reds type if player perfectly and with him dropping down here they will pounce all over him.

Last mock: Anthony Meo

Braves

28. Atlanta Braves – Brandon Nimmo, OF (HS, WY)

Why: Another pick I feel really good about. Nimmo is an animal that the Braves will sign away from Arkansas.

Last mock: Brandon Nimmo

Giants

29. San Francisco Giants – Henry Owens, LHP (HS, CA)

Why: There are varying opinions on Owens at this point. Some think he is falling, some think he is rising, but either way this is a logical landing point.

Last mock: Henry Owens

Twins

30. Minnesota Twins – Brian Goodwin, OF (Miami Dade College)

Why: The Twins love toolsy outfielders and Goodwin has some of the best tools in the draft. I’m sure they would love Tyler Anderson if he was available here.

Last mock: Cory Spangenberg

Rays

31. Tampa Bay Rays – Dillon Howard, RHP (HS, AK)

Why: Howard is a supremely projectable right-hander that the Rays might as well take a chance on with so many picks.

Last mock: Levi Michael

Rays

32. Tampa Bay Rays Jackie Bradley Jr., OF (South Carolina)

Why: I see the Rays going college player with this pick. With Micahel and Goodwin gone they take a player who would have been long gone here if not for the wrist injury.

Last mock: Robert Stephenson

Rangers

33. Texas Rangers – Austin Hedges, C (HS, CA)

Why: Texas could go a lot of different directions here. There is every chance they take Josh Bell and try to sign him to play for his hometown team. Catchers are always hot commodities and Hedges already has terrific skills for behind the plate.

Last mock: Travis Harrison

I was happier with my last mock draft, but this one isn’t terrible. I didn’t intend for Springer to fall that far and don’t think he should, but it would be something if he does.
