Some Binghamton Moves

Due to extreme ineffectiveness the BMets have removed top prospect Brad Holt from the starting rotation.  Holt has been awful this year, especially in his last two starts where he has given up 13 runs in just 6.2 innings.  Holt was scheduled to pitch tonight against the Richmond Flying Squirrels, but has been pulled and replaced with Eric Niesen who is returning from a concussion suffered back in April.

Consequently the man who gave Niesen the concussion, catcher Luke Montz, had surgery last week to repair a torn radial collateral ligament in his thumb and will remain on the DL for at least eight weeks.

Probably the most disheartening news is that third baseman Zach Lutz is also being placed on the DL with a stress fracture in his left foot.  His timetable to return in between six to eight weeks.  Lutz has a great bat, but just can’t seem to stay healthy.  Sound like a theme with the Mets?  Before going down with the injury Lutz had been first on the BMets and second in the organization with 8 homeruns.  D.J. Wabick will take his place on the roster.

Mets Farm Report: May 24th, 2010

Stars of the Night:
AAA – Ruben Tejada (1-3, 2B, SB)
AA – Mike Nickeas (1-2, 2 BB, RBI)
HiA – Kyle Allen (8 IP, 1 R, 7 H, 3 K, 0 BB)
LoA – Game suspended

AAA – Buffalo Bisons

Dylan Owen had a pretty decent start.  He ran into some trouble in the 5th inning when he loaded the bases, but was able to come out of the inning unscathed.  He left with a chance at a win, but poor bullpen work from Jose De La Torre and Bobby Parnell cost him a second win in as many starts in AAA.

AA – Binghamton Mets

HiA – St. Lucie Mets

LoA – Savannah Sand Gnats

Game suspended due to rain in the 13th inning.

Did We Make a Good Deal?: August 30th, 2000 Mets Acquire Jorge Velandia

The Deal:

The Why:  At this time the Mets were in a deadlock for first place in the NL East with the Atlanta Braves and first in the wild card standings looking for a little extra help.  While the A’s themselves were also in the playoff hunt they had no need for the 25-year-old utility infielder who was batting .125 in 18 games that season.  Nelson Cruz was having a breakout season in the DSL hitting .351 with 15 homeruns and 17 steals as a 20-year-old.

Who did it help the most?No one. Jorge Velandia had 0 hits and scored 1 run on 2 BB’s during the rest of the regular season for the Mets.  He did not make the playoff roster and did nothing to help the Mets who would win up losing to the New York Yankees in the World Series that year.  Nelson Cruz had some great seasons for the A’s minor league system before being traded to the Brewers for Keith Ginter.  Had the A’s held on to Cruz it would have helped them much more, but since Velandia did absolutely nothing for the Mets it’s even.

Did we make a good deal?Bad deal. Nelson Cruz has gone on to become a slugging All-Star outfielder for the Texas Rangers and Velandia is now sitting on his couch watching ball games at home.  There was nothing wrong with trading Cruz at that time because he was old for the DSL and no one could have predicted such a late breakout from him.  The thing that irks me about this deal is that it was pointless as there was no need for the Mets to acquire Velandia for anything more than cash considerations.

Daniel Murphy Optioned to AAA

The Mets have optioned rehabbing 1st baseman Daniel Murphy to first base after killing the ball in HiA St. Lucie.  During his time with the St. Lucie Mets Murphy was 8-for-13 with a homerun, double, and 6 RBI’s.  He also walked twice.

Murphy will see time at multiple positions in AAA most of which should be spent at 2nd base to spell Luis Castillo and some in right field so he could possibly platoon with Jeff Francoeur.
