To Start Top Prospect List
Posted by: | CommentsStarting today I am going to be doing a New York Mets top 40 (or 50) prospect list. I am going to put out the lists in segments of prospects at a time with a grading system similar to the one John Sickel’s uses and that I will have to explain when I post the list.
Update: I fell asleep before I finished the list so it will be up later today instead.
Mets Seek Relievers
Posted by: | CommentsThe Mets are currently being linked to a couple relivers including Fernando Rodney, Matt Capps, and Japanese import
Ryota Igarashi. The one thing all of these relievers have in common is that they all bring the cheese. Rodney averages 95 mph on his fastball, Capps 94 mph, and its been said Igarashi sits 93-96 mph with a hard splitter in the high 80′s and has hit 90 mph (not sure if that is accurate though).
As it stands now the Mets probably have no shit with Capps as he is coveted by pretty much the whole MLB and he will probably be able to find a role closing. The Mets seem like the most likely suitor to get Rodney as of now, but the Mets official site is reporting that the Mets are on the verge of signing Igarashi to a two year deal. The deal is supposed to be worth about $2.5 million dollars. Igarashi should be able to take over the spot of J.J. Putz and serve as the Mets set-up man.
Phillies Acquire Halliday; Lackey a Sawk
Posted by: | CommentsThere was a crazy three team deal between the Phillies, Mariners, and Blue Jays involving two Cy Young winners and a bunch of prospects. As of right now the deal shapes up as:
Phillies Get:
Roy Halladay (TOR)
Tyson Gillies (SEA)
Phillipe Aumont (SEA)
Juan Ramirez (SEA)
Mariners Get:
Cliff Lee (PHI)
Blue Jays Get:
Kyle Drabek (PHI)
Michael Taylor (PHI)
Travis D’Arnaud (PHI)
There were some rumbilings of J.A. Happ and Joe Blanton having to take physicals so who knows what else is going on, but this deal is a monster deal. I think this deal is pretty good for all teams and seeing that the Phillies will only have to sign Doc to a 3-year extension makes it that much better for them. Mariners are really making a statement this off-season and hopefully they don’t steal Jason Bay.

To make matters worse for Mets fans is that John Lackey signed a 5 year $85 million dollar contract with the Red Sox. That amount of money is absolutely insane and I’m glad the Mets didn’t bite on that offer. The price for Lackey was to steep for the Mets to even consider, but reports are now that they are interested in Chien-Ming Wang, something I proposed earlier. I am not going to panic because if the Mets can walk away with Wang, Bay, Bengie Molina, and say maybe Erik Bedard I would be really happy.
Mets Make Offers for Bay and Molina
Posted by: | CommentsDespite previous reports that the Mets were not interested in signing Jason Bay it has been reported by Jon Heyman that the Mets have offered him a 4 year $65 million dollar contract. If this is an accurate offer it is only $5 million dollars more than the contract Bay rejected from the BoSox a while ago. Since he has stated he loves it is Boston and would like to return I do not really see $5 million moe changing his mind. With his annual salary of at least $17 million for Bay I do not think there would be enough money left for the Mets to also sign John Lackey. If the Mets are going to be investing that kind of money I would want it to be in either Lackey or Matt Holliday. Even though Bay is a really nice hitter, Holliday is a special kind of hitter and younger. Either that or spend the money and get both Bay and Lackey, which would be beastly.
Adam Rubin reports that the Mets will also offer a deal to Bengie Molina. It was a matter of time before this happens, but I was still trying to hold out hope that they would get Dioner Navarro.
Yankees Acquire Granderson, Holliday Market Gets Smaller
Posted by: | CommentsThe deal is now officially done and will be reported shortly. Looking at this deal the Yankees got a steal, while the D’Backs got robbed.
Yankees get:
Curtis Granderson
Tigers get:
Max Scherzer
Daniel Schlereth
Austin Jackson
Phil Coke
Diamondbacks get:
Edwin Jackson
Ian Kennedy
On the deal:
Austin Jackson is a nice prospect, but nothing amazing or that the Yankees will miss especially now with Curtis Granderson, Ian Kennedy is setting himself up as that classic AAAA pitcher, but he could have some more sucess in the NL and Phil Coke is a bad reliever who can be replaced with no problem. Now Granderson, one of my favorite players, just makes the strong even stronger. Plug him into that Yankees lineup with the short porch in right field and he is set to bounce back. If I am the D’Backs I take no part in this deal and I have no clue why they would deal Max Scherzer for Edwin Jackson alone, let alone with Daniel Schlereth who looks like a future closer. Oh yea plus Granderson has a beast twitter account.

How does this help the Mets you might ask? Well the Yanks were one of the top players in the market for Matt Holliday and now they are all, but surely out of the running. Scott boras not can not use the Yanks as a team of leverage to jack up the price. If Jason Bay signs with the Sawx now the Mets are free sailing to Holliday.
Update: Ed Price is reporting that even if the Sawx don’t sign Bay, Holliday is not on their list. This could be shaping up for a very nice holliday for Mets fans!
