ByHot Foot – Opinion: Tonight’s Game Will Fuel Perez/Lowe Debate
Phew. Finally, we made it to the second half. Sure, not all the Mets have survived the trek, and some who have have done little more than limp along, but all that matters now is that the team do whatever it can to play well coming out of the All-Star break. Obviously, it’s going to be a challenge with key members still out of the starting lineup. Neither Jose Reyes (hamstring), Carlos Beltran (knee), nor Carlos Delgado (hip) have a timetable for their return.Still, the official second half of the season starts tonight on the road, against the Braves at Turner Field. The intriguing part of tonight’s game?
The Star Ledger – Senior softball players create instructional video for bumbling Mets
Anyone who has watched the Mets this season has seen enough mental mistakes and defensive bloopers to make them cringe. A group of Long Island seniors is doing something about it. A senior softball team called the Bristal All-Stars is creating a video to teach the Mets the basic fundamentals they have so often lacked this season. Think Tom Emanski video, but with your grandpa wearing that goofy cap instead of Fred McGriff. The video will be posted online and sent to the Mets.
MMO – Are We Going To The Playoffs?
Now that we are pretty much at the halfway point of the season, it is time to look and see what is in store for the next half of the season. After 87 games the Mets are 42-45 and 6.5 back in the division and the wild card. Presumably the Mets want to get 88-90 wins to make the playoffs. That means that the Mets will have to go 48-27 in the next few months. That is a tough task for most teams and especially the Mets. Can they pull it off? As Mr. Hopps said in his article, the next 27 games are crucial, 18 of the next 27 games are being played against teams that are below .500. The Mets have to get hot now and remain hot for the rest of the season or else they won’t make the playoffs.
NY Baseball Digest – Bernie “Made Off” With Mets Season
The All Star break was filled with Roy Halladay rumors, Pedro Martinez signing with the Phillies, and the Yankees possibly going after Cuban defector Aroldis Chapman. What about the Mets you ask? Well, looks like Jeff Francoeur will have to do this year at Citi Field. Despite the new ballpark the Mets appear content to keep the payroll at $145 million and sit on the sidelines. If you are confused, don’t be, because it looks like Bernie Madoff has a lot to do with it. Bart Hubbuch of the NY Post reported this week that it’s possible Fred Wilpon lost as much as $700 million in the now infamous Ponzi scheme. Interesting that it might not be bad drafting, injuries, or poor front office decisions, but rather, a shamed Wall Street financer that brings down the Mets.
The ‘Ropolitans – Gary, Keith and Ron catch tons of praise in the Observer
