- 42nd round pick Ryan Gunhouse has agreed to play college ball for USC and now has a major bargaining chip against the Mets. It now appears now unless the Mets will have to go way overslot or he will go to college and not sign. If he does decide to go college remember his name because he will be the one “who got away from this draft”.
- Didn’t think the Mets would sign this one, but they were able to sign Nick Santomauro(pictured) away from his senior year at Dartmouth for $82,000. He has some raw talent and can’t wait to see how he looks in Brooklyn.
- The Mets have signed 4th round pick Darrell Ceciliani and two others (James Ewing 12th round, and John Semel[great stats] 26th round). Signing bonus undisclosed (probably 240K). Has been described as a poor man’s Jacoby Ellsbury.
- The Mets have signed undrafted free agent Marshal Davis, ss.
- 30th round pick Jordan Harrison says he will sign for $100K. Let’s just hope the Mets are willing to give the high school lefty the money.
“That was more unexpected than being drafted, because I didn’t even known anybody was there,” Gunhouse said. “They said they had seen my YouTube video and liked my swing.”
The deadline for a drafted player to sign a contract is Aug. 15. Gunhouse said he’ll wait to see what kind of offer New York makes deciding between joining the organization or going to Southern California to play three years of college ball.
“It’s all about if (the Mets) give me enough to make it worth it,” Gunhouse said. “The USC thing kind of helps, cause it gives me more leverage. Either way, I’m sitting pretty.
“It still makes me excited just thinking about it,” said Harrison, who was New Caney’s star pitcher for the past couple years. Harrison, whose fastball has been clocked around 90-miles per hour, had 93 strikeouts in 54 innings during his senior year at New Caney. He features a nasty curveball that was almost unhittable for left-handed hitters. “It is a big advantage being a left-handed pitcher,” Harrison said. “I usually go after left-handers with the curveball. I try and set up the right-handers with a fastball away and then come inside with the four-seem (fastball).” He has not decided whether he is going to attend North Central Texas Junior College in Gainesville, or sign with the Mets. “I told them $100,000, but they haven’t made me an offer yet,” Harrison said. “If I don’t sign, I will go and pitch for North Central and see what happens.” “I am trying to develop a better change-up,” he said. “I also am working on a slider. I really want to be prepared … whichever way I go.”
