Keith Law Not Impressed, Zapata, Updates
ByWell First John Sickels was not impressed with the Mets draft, but he just focused on the first few picks not considering some of the later high schoolers, but now Keith Law is also not impressed. He had this to say in a draft chat:
Mr. Must Seet TV (NYC)
Klaw, what are you thougts about the Mets draft? If the Mets sign Matz and then Juan Uribe on the international front, I think that’s two quality lefties – which is more than they have now.
Keith LawDisappointing – very little upside there. It looks like another slot draft after Matz. I just think that a large-market team that expects to compete every year has to aim high in the draft. Average prospects are not likely to find everyday roles with the Yankees, Mets, Red Sox, Dodgers, etc.
...I thought this was a better draft then last year taking some good high school kids late like Chase Greene, Nelfi Zapata, Ryan Gunhouse, Zach Dotson, etc., but I guess the ‘experts’ feel differently. They haven’t been able to look at the Mets class as much as I have though so who knows we should have a better idea in 3 years...
According the the Boston Herald the Mets have signed 19th round draft pick, power hitting catcher,Nelfi Zapata.
According to sources, Boston English star catcher Nelfi Zapata signed with the New York Mets and is headed south. A 19th-round draft pick, Zapata opted for the Mets over Miami Dade College.
…If this is true good signing by the Mets I like this kids upside with great power potential from a serious organizational weakness. Now just sign me Ryan Gunhouse as well and the catchers department looks much much better…
Great article on 6th round pick David Buchanan. To sum it up it says that he has a great power sinker in the 90-92
mph range and splitter that should be his out pitch in the majors (Tim Hudson upside? A man can dream can’t he?). I can’t really think of the last player developed with a splitter except for maybe Brant Rustich who is in the system right now.
Anup Sinha of the scouting organization Perfect Game USA published an online report stating that the lanky 6’3” right-hander had an excellent fastball in terms of both velocity and movement.
“Buchanan gets heavy action on his heater and was living in the 90-92 MPH range,” Sinha wrote after seeing Buchanan pitch this spring.
“He showed good feel for a splitter which I anticipate to be his knockout punch at the next level… The [Major League] bullpen would be an intriguing possibility.””
OH, and on the signing front – “While Buchanan’s agent and Mets representatives worked on a contract Monday, the former Tiger spent the afternoon exercising with Thompson at Home Plate’s Peachtree City facility.
