Hot FootDog House Dweller of the Week: Daniel Mur–LUIS DROPPED THAT?!

I was really glad when Daniel Murphy was brought north with the big club out of Spring Training, and even made him my first Man-Crush of the Week back in March, but I don’t remember the last time he looked as good as he did late last season and early this season. The struggling Murphy has only 1 hit in 10 ABs, with 2 walks and striking out 4 times.  He has only 2 RBI for the month of June. I really like the kid, but it’s been a rough go for him for quite awhile now.

What’s the matter with Johan Santana? It’s a legitimate question to ask after the Mets‘ ace was bludgeoned for a career-high nine runs in just three innings Sunday of a 15-0 Subway Series embarrassment at the hands of the Yankees.  Santana, who is sporting a 6.50 ERA in his past six starts after allowing just four earned runs the entire month of April, bristled at postgame questions about his health.

The Herd:
Sunday is a day of rest; at least it was for the Bisons bullpen Sunday afternoon at Coca-Cola Field.Bisons’ starting pitcher Brandon Knight, struck out seven Bulls hitters en route to a complete game in the Herd’s, 8-1, win. Knight threw 109 pitches (80 strikes) while allowing just six hits and one run on the afternoon. The 33 year-old retired the side in order in five of the nine innings. The complete game is the second for a Bisons pitcher this year. Dillon Gee threw a seven-inning complete game in game one of a doubleheader on May 2 vs. Louisville.

The Star LedgerBy the numbers: New York Mets starter Johan Santana’s June struggles

Sure, Johan Santana’s has struggled this month. But how does this compare to other career slumps? Here are the weakest three-game streaks since Santana became a full-time starter in 2004: 2004 — 5/18 to 5/29: 14.2 ER, 15 ER, 6 BB, 14 K, 3 HR, 2005 — 5/11 to 5/22: 18.1 IP, 13 ER, 3 BB, 24 K, 3 HR, 2006 — 4/4 to 4/15: 17.1 IP, 11 ER, 6 BB, 12 K, 2 HR, 2007 — 9/15 to 9/26: 18 IP, 12 ER, 6 BB, 22 K, 3 HR, 2008 — 5/10 to 5/22: 20.2 IP, 10 ER, 3 BB, 11 K, 3 HR, 2009 — 6/2 to 6/14: 16 IP, 17 ER, 4 BB, 8 K, 6 HR

NewsdayBrian Bruney, Francisco Rodriguez and earning the right to say something

After a long week, I passed out last night while watching this episode of “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” and when I woke up shortly after 1 a.m., I joined in a discussion that a few of the regulars were having about the Brian Bruney-Franscisco Rodriguez feud. I agree with Jim Baumbach’s take: Bruney was way out of line in calling out K-Rod as he did.  Then NaOH asked, Ken, where would you say is the line of accomplishment? Is a guy like Pedroia (RoY, WS Champ, MVP) sufficiently accomplished even though this is only his third season? What about Jose Molina, a guy who has no notable accomplishments but is in his 10th season?
