Posted by: | CommentsNewsday - Mets, Yankees fans refusing to overpay
The evidence is mounting rapidly. In the Bronx, 23 home dates and only one announced sellout, on Opening Day. In Flushing, the same number of dates, the same number of sellouts. Through Friday, the Mets and Yankees were leading their divisions. Yet there are plenty of seats available at both new ballparks despite a winter of priceless free publicity and an endless stream of hype during each team’s broadcasts.
Faith and Fear – Omir the Driving Force
Omir Santos drove home Gary Sheffield Friday night while driving away Ramon Castro. He may be our most versatile catcher ever. As we click our heels over Santos, we are destined to remember Castro fleetingly…which is just about the only fleetness to be associated with Ramon. Yet in the annals of Mets backup backstops, he was actually quite the latter-day stalwart. By starting Wednesday when oh me/oh my/Omir was sidelined by a bruise to the shin, Ramon nosed ahead of Vance Wilson for ninth on the all-time Mets games caught chart, 256 to 255. I know —
Jose Reyes tells the Daily News he’s going to test his right calf running at Citi Field on Saturday. Assuming all goes well, he’s headed to Port St. Lucie on Sunday, and expects to play in an extended spring training game Monday.
When the Mets take the field against Josh Johnson and the Marlins this afternoon at Citi Field, don’t look for David Wright at third base. Instead, just peer into the dugout and you’ll be able to see him chumming it up with last night’s hero, Omir Santos, who will be sitting on the bench too.
David (D J) Wabick OF/1B L R 6’2 210 5-30-84Wabick was originally drafted out of high school in 2002, in the 38th round, by the Chicago White Sox, but chose to go to college instead. “DJ” first played college ball in Illinois and then I transferred down south to a junior college in Flroida. Eventually, he transferred once more to Tthe College of Charleston, where he hit .415 with 9 homers, 27 doubles, 66 RBIs, and 26 walks in 63 games.
Broadway Show Opens in NY; Castro Out
Posted by: | CommentsOmar Minaya announced after the game today that catcher Ramon Castro as been traded to the Chicago White Sox for right handed pitcher Lance Broadway. Broadway, 25, is a former 1st round pick, but doesn’t have overwhelming stuff with his repitoire including a 88-90 mph fastball, mid 70′s curve, and low 80′s change up.
…Broadway is reporting to Triple A Buffalo where he will likely take the place of recently injured Dillon Gee…
Nick Evans is Depressed
Posted by: | Comments
Last week on WFAN radio talk show host Ed Coleman reported that Nick Evans was suffering from clinical depression. Evans was 7-75 (.093) in 22 AAA games before being demoted to AA where he has not played a game since May 10th. Evans broke into the scene with a great debut against the Colorado Rockies last year and was hot in spring training, but once he lost the job to Sheffield he was plain and simply sucked.
…I feel bad for the kid and hope he is okay. Myabe he will pull a Zack Grienke and come back just as dominant. One can only hope things would work out so well for him…
Marte Not So Hot
Posted by: | CommentsJefry Marte, 3b, Mets. Nothing has gone right for Marte since late April. He finished his game on April 19 with .317/.349/.415 averages—more than respectable production for a 17-year-old kid from the Dominican Republic in low Class A. Since then the Savannah third baseman has been mired in a miserable slump, batting .177/.218/.271 (17-for-96) with 26 strikeouts and eight errors in 23 games. Marte collected three hits in 23 at-bats last week, notching a triple and a walk.
Sorry For Not Posting
Posted by: | CommentsThis is the busiest week of the year and I have had absolutely no time to post. Luckily the week is almost over and I will finally be able to post regularly. Great week for the Mets though they have been on fire as of late I am really liking the agressive play I am seeing from this team, especially my boy David Wright.
