A $36-million pitcher on training wheels? With the Mets running out of patience with Oliver Perez, whose baffling psyche was on display again in Tuesday’s loss, the only remaining option could be to start calling his pitches from the bench. The Mets don’t want to go there with Perez – or with any of their pitchers. But it’s been done before, and the team can’t continue to sit idly by as their rotation self-destructs night after night.

While I openly mock the sentiment that the Mets lack some sort of “killer instinct,” I understand it. Watching hit after hit fall in with the bases empty and then a series of double plays and strikeouts with the bases loaded seems inexplicable. The Mets finally face a lefthanded starter Friday night when the Nationals’ Scott Olsen opposes Johan Santana at Citi Field in the opener of a three-game series. So Jerry Manuel finally gets to fill out a righty-oriented lineup card.The manager projected that Gary Sheffield and Fernando Tatis will man the corner outfield spots over lefty hitters Ryan Church and Daniel Murphy, although Manuel said “flip a coin” as to which player is assigned which spot.

A third of Major League Baseball’s 30 franchises declined in value as the economy affected teams laden with debt or located in cities with high unemployment, according to Forbes magazine’s annual rankings.Team values increased an average of 1 percent to $482 million over the past year, with the Yankees, worth $1.5 billion, leading the list for the 12th straight year, the magazine said.
