Mets Sign Mike Lamb

Posted by: | Comments (0)

According to Adam Rubin the Mets have signed utility player Mike Lamb.  Lamb is most likely to join a struggling Buffalo roster, that recently was joined by Willy Mo Pena.

Even though he is a weird player to say this about, I’ve always had a soft spot for Mike Lamb.  He is a solid player with a very good off the bench bat that could help down the stretch.  He is also going to add some more depth, which is always a positive…

Baseball HandymanScouting the Sally – Jeurys Familia, SP, NYM

Jeurys Familia (4 IP, 0 ER, 2 H, 2 BB, 3 K) -Quickly becoming a serious sleeper in the Mets organization, Jeurys Familia is off to a great start posting a 2-0 Record with a 0.63 ERA and .128 BAA in his first three 2009 starts. Hailing from the Dominican Republic, the 19-year old righty was impressive in his four innings of work throwing a 90 MPH fastball and rudimentary breaking pitch; Typical of young Dominican hurlers.

Mets Fever- Figgy Back in Organization

According to Adam Rubin of the Daily News, Nelson Figueroa has re-signed a minor league deal with the Mets. After being mistreated by management, Figueroa had opted for free agency once he cleared waivers. As the Mets rotation was falling apart Figgy was testing the free agent market, with Manuel threatening rotational changes it looks like the Mets give him the best opportunity of returning to the majors.

Macks Mets -Minor Stuff – April 25, 2009

The Herd: An off day and a return home to Coca-Cola Field did nothing for the Buffalo Bisons but raise manager Ken Oberkfell’s blood pressure. The Herd’s April disaster continued with a lifeless 4-0 loss to the Syracuse Chiefs on Friday night before an announced crowd of 7,173. Buffalo managed just three hits— one was a double by pitcher Brandon Knight

Daily News -Ball, fate in hands of Mike Pelfrey

Mike Pelfrey didn’t have to be told that Saturdays’ start against Washington is an important one for him for multiple reasons.  Pelfrey, who was forced to skip his previous outing last weekend with forearm tendinitis, also was made aware of manager Jerry Manuel‘s comments that all members of the Mets‘ starting rotation besides Johan Santana are in jeopardy of losing their spots unless they improve immediately.

Game MVP

D. Wright Johan Santana
6 IP, 10 K’s
Win

Finally a good outing from a starter. It is just too bad everytime there is a good start it is Johan. No other starter can do anything. Johan’s ERA actually went up to 0.70… pretty scary high ERA!!

Some good things all around in this game. Bobby Parnell, Pedro Feliciano, and J.J. Putz gave up no runs in 2 innings of work and K-Rod got the save despite giving up a 2-run home run to Jesus Flores.

This was one of the first times ive witnissed David Wright get booed like that, and he doesn’t deserve it. The guy is putting enormous pressure on himself causing him to “choke” in April. Give him sometime to come around if he doesn’t 40 or so games into the season then theres something wrong.

…Next game Saturday afternoon against Washington 1:10 first pitch…

NewsdayWarthen has his work cut out for him with Perez

A $36-million pitcher on training wheels? With the Mets running out of patience with Oliver Perez, whose baffling psyche was on display again in Tuesday’s loss, the only remaining option could be to start calling his pitches from the bench.  The Mets don’t want to go there with Perez – or with any of their pitchers. But it’s been done before, and the team can’t continue to sit idly by as their rotation self-destructs night after night.

Amazin Avenue - Regarding Heart, Grit, Fire

While I openly mock the sentiment that the Mets lack some sort of “killer instinct,” I understand it. Watching hit after hit fall in with the bases empty and then a series of double plays and strikeouts with the bases loaded seems inexplicable. The whole ordeal recalls a great Joe Posnanski quote JoshNY posted about a month ago, that is worth revisiting: “I think that this human search for pattern is especially prevalent in baseball. What is the whole concept of “clutch hitting” but our minds searching for a pattern and a reason? This[...]

Daily NewsSheffield, Tatis in line to face Nationals’ lefty Olsen

The Mets finally face a lefthanded starter Friday night when the Nationals’ Scott Olsen opposes Johan Santana at Citi Field in the opener of a three-game series. So Jerry Manuel finally gets to fill out a righty-oriented lineup card. The manager projected that Gary Sheffield and Fernando Tatis will man the corner outfield spots over lefty hitters Ryan Church and Daniel Murphy, although Manuel said “flip a coin” as to which player is assigned which spot.

North JerseyMost MLB teams have lost value

A third of Major League Baseball’s 30 franchises declined in value as the economy affected teams laden with debt or located in cities with high unemployment, according to Forbes magazine’s annual rankings.Team values increased an average of 1 percent to $482 million over the past year, with the Yankees, worth $1.5 billion, leading the list for the 12th straight year, the magazine said.

Star LedgerNew York Mets sign outfielder Wily Mo Pena to minor-league contract

The Mets signed outfielder Wily Mo Pena to a minor-league contract Monday, adding some much-needed depth to their Triple-A affiliate.  Pena, 27, will report to Port St. Lucie, Fla., for extended spring training before joining the Buffalo Bisons, which are off to a dreadful start in the International League.  With some of the Mets’ top prospects, Buffalo is just 1-10 and in last place in the North Division.

MetsgrrlBullpen Issues

Driving home from Connecticut on Sunday, I got to listen to the last couple of innings of the game. One of the things I heard Howie mention was that the Padres were going to issue a formal complaint to MLB about the new bullpens, because they couldn’t see what was going on on the field from the bullpen.  As a reminder (and for those of you who haven’t been there yet):

Daily NewsStart to 2009 goes other way for Mets’ hot-hitting Luis Castillo

What does it say when Luis Castillo is leading all Met regulars in hitting – both in overall batting average and with runners in scoring position?  Many fans will view that statistic as a major cause for concern. But Jerry Manuel is particularly encouraged that Castillo has jumped off to the quick start the Mets were hoping for in order to get the fans in Flushing back on the side of the oft-booed second baseman.

Press & Sun BulletinMerritt finds closing to be good Change

It’s one of the things that makes his start with the Binghamton Mets so remarkable.  Merritt has always been a relief pitcher, but until month, he had never been his team’s closer. Since inheriting that role out of the B-Mets’ bullpen, he’s been automatic.  Merritt has five saves in as many opportunities for the B-Mets, whose home game on Monday against Trenton was rained out and will be made up on May 16 as part of a doubleheader.

NY TimesBaseball Fights Fakery With an Army of Authenticators

There was little hope for authenticating the first home run ball at the new Yankee Stadium. It would probably disappear into the outfield seats. Even if a fan tossed it back onto the field, there would be no guarantee that it was the same ball. The cans of bug spray that the Yankees’ Joba Chamberlain used in the 2007 playoffs have been authenticated, too.  Then Yankees catcher Jorge Posada hit a home run into Monument Park, the center-field shrine closed to the public during games.
